WILLIAM HEWITT REEVES

This is a photo of the 1st Battalion Royal Welch Fusilies’s band 1897-1898 - my grandfather is in this photograph but unfortunately I don't know which one he is. His name was William Hewitt Reeves and he joined the Royal Welch in 1886 aged 14. He was recruited from Newport Market School in London, an industrial school for destitute and orphaned boys. They taught him to play the clarinet and he was a member of the band for the whole of his career. This photograph was taken shortly before leaving for South Africa to fight in the second Boer War. He became a recruiting officer in Wrexham during the first World War
